Shaping the future: Our strategy for research and innovation in humanitarian response.
An article by the Guardian highlights the desperate need to improve access to water and sanitation across the globe.
“Around the world, 946 million people still go to the toilet outside” which can lead to contaminated water and leave populations vulnerable to diseases like cholera. The Guardian has developed an interactive map that ranks regions according the percentage of the population that practices open defecation and countries that have met the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on sanitation, among other factors.
What is the HIF doing on WASH?
The Humanitarian Innovation Fund recently called for proposals to carry out research on specific water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) areas. The aim is to better understand the nature of these complex challenges, why previous solutions have failed and where we might look for new inspiration. The results will inform the design and implementation of the next round of WASH challenges.
