Shaping the future: Our strategy for research and innovation in humanitarian response.

A global organisation that finds solutions to complex humanitarian problems through research and innovation..
Our purpose is clear: we work in partnership with a global community of humanitarian actors, researchers and innovators to improve the quality of humanitarian action and deliver better outcomes for people affected by crises.
We empower the humanitarian community. Find out how we can support you...

The Humanitarian Innovation Fund has an ambitious programme focused on solving emergency water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) problems.

We are currently recruiting for six research projects, each unpacking a different problem. We are interested in understanding the nature of these complex challenges, why previous solutions have failed and where we might look for new inspiration even if is outside the sector.

This information will help us design and facilitate innovation processes to support people working on these problems to have a bigger impact. We will also be creating inspiring fact sheets and case studies to engage a wide audience.

The six problems that have been shortlisted for the research are:
Hand washing solutions and promotion
Water treatment
Community-level excreta management
Solid waste management
Surface water drainage
Urban sanitation alternatives

If you have knowledge about one or more of the problem areas and are interested in helping us with this important research please get in touch.

Proposals should be submitted by the 13th July 2015. Further details are in the terms of reference that can be downloaded by clicking on the problems above.

It is located at the friction points of three continental tectonic plates and is prone to seismic activities such as earthquakes and tsunamis. A significant proportion of the populations affected by small or medium scale disasters are deprived from their right to life and dignity. Disaster events push socio-economically marginalized people into poverty, increasing their dependency on natural resources. This, in turn, degrades the environment and further increases their vulnerability to disaster risk. Despite the growing understanding and acceptance of the importance of disaster risk reduction and increased disaster response capacities, disasters and the management and reduction of risk continue to pose a challenge.Casual observation indicates that over the past decade there has been an increased frequency in natural disasters. The plight of chronically vulnerable communities. Recurring disasters also pose a great development challenge for all countries in Asia, and particularly in Indonesia. In several provinces, poor and chronically disaster-prone communities continue, year after year, to be vulnerable to recurrent disasters such as flood, drought and forest fire.
